Migrating Monarchs

Today we had a great, hands-on science lesson when we noticed tons of monarch butterflies on our tree in the backyard. Ellie managed to take a picture of one of them after the others scattered. Here is her photo.

This is one of our favorite things we've discovered about homeschooling - going with the flow and learning what interests us from day to day rather than being stuck to a specific lesson in a curriculum. We completely abandoned our other science lesson in order to come in and research Monarch migration. It was so much more meaningful, because Ellie was so interested in it. There is an excellent website for learning more about Texas monarch migration, including teacher's lessons and a printable journal for recording observations, etc. It is located at http://www.learner.org/jnorth/monarch/

Here is Ellie writing her questions and observations while a monarch watches nearby.
